Therapeutic Riding Program

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Working with and riding horses has proven to benefit the physical, social and emotional well-being of those with and without disabilities. Program participants experience improvement in balance, posture, core strength, fine and gross motor skills, as well as a positive sense of self, decrease in impulsivity, development of critical thinking, problem-solving skills and so much more.

WHO WOULD BENEFIT?

Horse lovers aged 3 and up with cognitive disabilities, learning disabilities, anxiety, and low self-esteem. We have experience teaching basic riding skills to students with a wide range of disabilities including Autism, Down Syndrome, Global Apraxia, Fragile X, Generalized Anxiety Disorder etc.  Therapeutic riding has been proven to be beneficial in many areas of life for those with cognitive disabilities, but keep in mind that this activity is not beneficial for anyone that does not enjoy being around horses.

WHAT DOES A LESSON ENTAIL?

We offer private and semi-private (2 students max), hour-long lessons with one on one instruction. Students work with the same instructor at each lesson and, depending on each student's needs, will have a team of one to three volunteers assigned to assist during each lesson. Lessons consist of learning how to groom, tack, ride and safely work with the horses from the ground. Our lesson plans focus teaching basic riding skills while instilling a sense of responsibility, and independence and encouraging participation in social engagements.

PRICING AND PAYMENTS?

Therapeutic riding is a recreational/adaptive sports activity and is not covered by insurance. However, there are several agencies in our area that provide funding for therapeutic riding. Please visit our FAQ page for more information about those resources. Students committed to our program attend lessons once per week and monthly package payments are collected at the beginning of each month.
